Maxwell’s South African Tour Cancelled as Fans Left Heartbroken Days Before Concerts
South African fans counting down the days until Grammy winning R&B icon Maxwell returned to the country have been dealt a major disappointment after organisers confirmed that both of his highly anticipated concerts have been cancelled.
The singer, who has built a loyal following in South Africa over the years, was scheduled to perform at the SunBet Arena in Pretoria on 8 August and the Grand Arena at GrandWest in Cape Town on 11 August. Instead, thousands of ticket holders are now facing unexpected changes to their plans after the shows were officially called off.
Event organisers Vertex Events announced on Monday that the concerts would not go ahead because of unforeseen circumstances beyond the artist’s control.
According to the company, Maxwell’s management informed organisers that the singer would no longer be able to travel to South Africa for the performances. Despite discussions between both parties and efforts to find a workable solution, no alternative arrangement could be reached.
In an official statement, Vertex Events said several options had been explored with Maxwell’s team in an attempt to save the tour.
“Several options were explored between Maxwell’s team and Vertex Events. Unfortunately, the only remaining option was to cancel the concerts,” the organisers said.
Vertex Events added that the circumstances leading to the cancellation were outside the control of both the promoter and the artist.
The announcement comes as a significant setback for fans who had eagerly awaited Maxwell’s return to what many have described as one of his favourite international destinations. The award winning singer has enjoyed a strong connection with South African audiences throughout his career, making the cancellation particularly disappointing for music lovers.
Addressing fans directly, Maxwell expressed his regret and apologised for the sudden change of plans.
“Due to unforeseen circumstances beyond my control, unfortunately, I will no longer be able to perform in South Africa as planned. This decision was not taken lightly. I am deeply sorry to everyone who was looking forward to these concerts. Thank you for your understanding and your continued support. I hope to be with you all soon,” he said.
While organisers have not provided further details about the circumstances behind the cancellation, they confirmed that all ticket holders will receive full refunds.
Fans are advised to monitor official communication channels from Vertex Events and their ticketing providers for information regarding the refund process.
For now, Maxwell’s long awaited return to South Africa has been placed on hold, leaving many supporters hoping that a new tour will be announced in the near future.
