Municipal Water Tanker Driver Arrested After Protester Killed During eThekwini Water Demonstration
Tensions over prolonged water shortages turned deadly in Adams as a municipal water tanker allegedly struck and killed a protester, leaving a community in mourning and raising urgent questions about accountability.
A peaceful protest over ongoing water outages in Adams, south of Durban, ended in tragedy on Monday morning when a man was allegedly run over and killed by an eThekwini Municipality water tanker.
The fatal incident has sent shockwaves through the community after video footage, now widely shared on social media, appeared to capture the moment the municipal vehicle drove towards a group of protesters. Moments later, one of the demonstrators was run over.
Emergency responders declared the victim dead at the scene.
The incident unfolded in Ward 96 in eMbumbulu, where frustrated residents had gathered to protest persistent disruptions to their water supply. The demonstration was part of growing community anger over continued service delivery failures that have affected households in the area.
In a statement, eThekwini Municipality confirmed that the vehicle involved was one of its water tankers. The municipality also confirmed that the driver has been arrested and is facing a charge of murder.
