Former Msinga Motorsport Arena Reborn as Modern Private School Serving More Than 300 Learners
A venue once known for the thunder of spinning tyres is now echoing with the voices of children as a remarkable transformation brings new hope for education in rural KwaZulu-Natal.
What was once one of KwaZulu-Natal’s best known motorsport destinations has entered a powerful new chapter. The famous Mphelankani spinning arena in Msinga has been transformed into a modern private school, replacing roaring engines with classrooms filled with learners determined to build brighter futures.
The ambitious project was spearheaded by businessman and uMkhonto weSizwe Party Member of the Provincial Legislature, Smanga Desmond Mabaso, who has converted the former drifting venue into the new home of Lobethal School.
The school now provides education to 318 learners from Grade RR to Grade 12 and employs 24 teachers. The upgraded campus includes modern classrooms, sports facilities and a swimming pool, creating an environment designed to give children in the area access to quality education without leaving their community.
A Father’s Vision Finally Realised
For Mabaso, the transformation is far more than a construction project. It represents the fulfilment of a dream that began three decades ago with his late father, Reverend Chazuyise Barney Mabaso, founder of Lobethal School and leader of the Rock of Life Mission in Tugela Ferry.
Speaking during the official opening ceremony, Mabaso said the decision to relocate the school came after his election to the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature significantly increased his responsibilities, making it impossible to continue operating the popular Msinga Driftkhana events.
“When I was deployed to the Legislature, my responsibilities increased significantly, and I could no longer continue hosting the event,” Mabaso said.
Rather than allowing the venue to stand empty, he chose to revive his father’s long held vision by giving the site a completely new purpose.
“I had always wanted to fulfil my father’s vision of growing the school, so I decided to relocate it here,” he said.
Bringing Quality Education Closer to Home
The move also addresses long standing challenges experienced at the school’s previous premises, where limited classroom space and a lack of recreational facilities restricted growth.
The larger campus now provides room for learners to develop academically and socially while giving teachers access to improved facilities.
Mabaso hopes the investment will reduce the need for families to send their children to schools in Greytown, Dundee and Glencoe in search of better educational opportunities.
“I want this to become a state of the art school so that children from this area who currently travel to Greytown, Dundee and Glencoe for quality education will no longer have to travel far,” he said.
The development marks a significant investment in education within the rural Msinga community, where access to well equipped schools remains limited.
Financial Pressures Threaten the School’s Mission
Despite the impressive transformation, school leaders say financial sustainability remains their greatest concern.
Lobethal School principal Hector Bongumusa Nxumalo used the opening ceremony to appeal to donors, businesses and community partners for financial support, warning that many families are already struggling to afford school fees.
“Whenever we increase school fees, many parents are unable to afford them,” Nxumalo said.
He explained that maintaining the school’s operations has become increasingly difficult, particularly when it comes to retaining qualified educators.
“Our biggest challenge is paying our teachers’ salaries. They do not even receive employment benefits, but because of their passion for our children, they continue to serve,” he said.
The school hopes that partnerships with donors, businesses and educational organisations will help secure long term financial stability, ensuring learners continue to receive quality education while teachers are fairly supported.
A New Future for a Familiar Landmark
The transformation of the Mphelankani spinning arena stands as a powerful symbol of renewal for the Msinga community.
Where crowds once gathered to watch high performance motorsport, hundreds of children now arrive each day with hopes of building successful futures through education.
For Mabaso, the project is not only the fulfilment of a personal promise to his late father but also an investment in the next generation. As Lobethal School begins this new chapter, its success may ultimately be measured not by the crowds it attracts, but by the lives it changes.
