Media icon Oprah Winfrey has announced that the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls (OWLAG) in Henley-on-Klip in Meyerton in Gauteng will be transferred to government administration.

Since opening in 2007, OWLAG has educated more than 1,000 girls from disadvantaged backgrounds, with a focus on leadership and academic excellence.

The academy will continue operating under the Oprah Winfrey brand until the end of the 2027 academic year, after which direct operations at the Henley-on-Klip campus will cease.

Going forward, Winfrey’s education initiative will shift to a national scholarship programme.

The new model will fund girls accepted into leading schools across South Africa, broadening the impact beyond a single campus.
