Madlanga commission orders Suliman Carrim to testify after fifth postponement request
Controversial North West businessman Suliman Carrim has been ordered to appear before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry on 14 August 2026, following four previous postponements and his recent request for a fifth.
In handing down his ruling, Commission Chairperson Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga said Carrim must undergo independent medical assessments if he maintains that he is medically unfit to testify.
The Commission has ordered two independent medical professionals to submit reports by no later than 12 August, confirming whether Carrim is genuinely unable to testify on 14 August.
Carrim will only be excused if he undergoes a medical evaluation by a specialist agreed upon by both his legal representatives and the Commission’s evidence leaders no later than Monday, 3 August 2026.
This specialist must then submit a medical report, alongside supporting reasons, to the Commission by 12 August.
If the parties fail to agree on a medical specialist, an independent medical evaluation will be conducted instead. In this scenario, the professional will be nominated by the chairperson of the relevant medical association in the field in which Carrim’s current doctor practises.
Justice Madlanga indicated that detailed reasons for the ruling will be issued at a later stage.
Consequently, Carrim is expected to appear before the Commission unless the independent medical assessments confirm that he is genuinely unable to testify.
