Suspect to Appear in Court After R2 Million Dagga Seizure Near Pongola River
A 33 year old man is expected to appear before the Magudu Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 27 July 2026, after police uncovered 19 bales of compressed dagga with an estimated street value of R2 million during an intelligence driven operation near the Pongola River.
The arrest follows a swift police response after officers received information that four men had allegedly been seen transporting large bales of dagga before hiding them in a densely vegetated area close to the river.
Acting on the intelligence, police moved quickly to the identified location to verify the report. A search of the area led to the discovery of 19 bales of compressed dagga concealed in the bush, marking a significant blow to suspected drug trafficking activities in the area.
One suspect was arrested at the scene and has since been charged in connection with the seizure. Police believe at least three other suspects were involved in the operation and have launched a manhunt to trace and arrest those who remain at large.
The recovered dagga is estimated to have a street value of R2 million, highlighting the scale of the suspected operation and the potential impact of the seizure on the illegal drug trade in the region.
The accused is scheduled to make his first court appearance before the Magudu Magistrate’s Court on Monday, where he is expected to face charges related to dealing in dagga.
Meanwhile, police investigations continue as authorities work to identify and apprehend the remaining suspects believed to have fled before officers arrived at the scene.
