Mosimane addresses Bafana job, confirms SAFA talks
Former Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly coach Pitso Mosimane has broken his silence on reports linking him with the Bafana Bafana coaching job.
His comments come as Hugo Broos’ contract reaches its end, with SAFA yet to announce whether it will renew the Belgian coach’s deal.
Although SAFA has denied reports that Broos has already been offered a new contract, speculation continues that Mosimane is among the leading candidates to replace him.
Speaking at the launch of his new book, Youth Football Coaching Manual, in Johannesburg on Thursday, Mosimane confirmed that SAFA had engaged him and several other coaches.
“The Bafana job? I don’t know when Hugo Broos’ contract ends. I also don’t know if the position is available,” said Mosimane.
“But I do know that the federation has spoken to many of us about a succession plan. They wanted to know what our vision is and how we would take Bafana to a higher level.”
Mosimane said every national team should always strive to improve.
“I always say it’s important to leave the jersey in a better place. There is always room for improvement.”
“I left Sundowns after winning the CAF Champions League, and they went on to win another one. That shows that every team can keep growing.”
He added that South Africa has previously won the AFCON under Clive Barker and qualified for the FIFA World Cup under Carlos Alberto Parreira.
“So we should now aim to go further in major tournaments. Nobody is indispensable.”
If appointed, Mosimane would return for a second spell as Bafana Bafana coach after leading the national team between 2010 and 2012.
Bafana Bafana will begin their 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign in September, with Kenya among their group-stage opponents.
