SASSA Meyerton Office Closed After Fire Damage, Beneficiaries Redirected to Other Branches
A fire that broke out inside a Gauteng commercial building has forced the temporary closure of the SASSA Meyerton Local Office, leaving officials working to restore services while beneficiaries are redirected to nearby branches.
The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has temporarily closed its Meyerton Local Office in Gauteng following a fire incident that damaged parts of the commercial building where the office is located.
The incident happened on Tuesday evening, 21 July 2026, after a fire reportedly started at one of the shops inside the building before spreading to other businesses, including the SASSA office.
According to SASSA Gauteng Region Senior Manager Lungelo Mkamba, the full extent of the damage is still being assessed by the agency’s Security Management and Facilities Management Units, together with relevant authorities.
“The cause of the fire is not yet known and is being investigated,” Mkamba said.
The closure was implemented as a precautionary measure to protect beneficiaries, employees and other stakeholders while safety inspections and damage assessments are carried out.
Beneficiaries advised to use alternative SASSA offices
SASSA confirmed that beneficiaries who normally receive assistance at the Meyerton Local Office will not be left without access to essential services.
Those requiring in person assistance have been advised to visit the Vereeniging or Sebokeng Local Offices until further notice.
To maintain service delivery, SASSA officials from the Meyerton branch have also been temporarily redeployed to neighbouring offices to help manage increased demand and ensure beneficiaries continue receiving support.
The agency said the move is aimed at reducing delays and ensuring that vulnerable beneficiaries can still access critical social assistance services.
Online services remain available during closure
SASSA has encouraged beneficiaries to make use of its digital platforms while the Meyerton office remains closed.
A range of online services, including eLife Certification, social grant applications and other self service options, are available through the agency’s online portal.
Beneficiaries applying for the COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant can continue submitting applications through the dedicated SRD platform.
The agency has urged members of the public to use online services where possible to reduce pressure on nearby offices.
Investigation into fire continues
SASSA said the safety of beneficiaries and employees remains its highest priority and that the Meyerton Local Office will only reopen once the premises have been confirmed safe for occupation.
The agency has apologised for the inconvenience caused by the unexpected closure and said all efforts are being made to restore normal operations as quickly and safely as possible.
Further updates will be shared once the damage assessment has been completed. Beneficiaries have been encouraged to follow SASSA’s official communication channels for the latest information regarding the reopening of the Meyerton office.
