‘I AM HER’: Four South African Artists Release Powerful Anthem Honouring the Legacy of the 1956 Women’s March
As South Africa prepares to mark the 70th anniversary of one of the nation’s defining moments, four influential artists have come together to honour the women whose courage reshaped history.
Their new anthem, I AM HER, is more than a musical collaboration. It is a heartfelt tribute to the more than 20,000 women who marched to the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956, standing united against injustice and leaving a legacy that continues to inspire generations.
Set for release on 1 August 2026, the song arrives just ahead of Women’s Month, carrying a message that resonates far beyond the recording studio. It celebrates resilience, strength and the enduring power of women’s voices in South Africa.
Inspired by the historic Women’s March, I AM HER reflects on the sacrifices made by those who refused to remain silent. Their determination transformed a protest into one of the country’s most powerful symbols of resistance, and their legacy continues to shape conversations around equality and justice today.
Rather than looking only to the past, the anthem also speaks directly to the present. It encourages women to confront ongoing challenges with confidence, embrace their strength and continue breaking barriers in every sphere of society.
The project brings together four artists whose careers span different genres and generations, creating a collaboration rooted in both experience and purpose.
Award winning singer Zamo, recognised with an MTN SWAMA Award, is celebrated for her soulful performances and collaborations with internationally respected musician Salif Keita and the late Dr Mbongeni Ngema.
She is joined by Soulful G, one of South Africa’s leading amapiano vocalists, whose performances have featured on prominent stages including Idols SA, FNB Stadium, Channel O and Trace Studios.
Completing the line up are worship artist and community leader Gg Aura, whose music is centred on inspiration and hope, and Nkiyase, the SAMA nominated kwaito artist whose career spans more than two decades. Nkiyase has worked alongside South African music icons including Trompies and Oskido while also taking kwaito music to audiences in Germany and the United Kingdom.
Together, the four artists have created a song that aims to honour the women who came before them while inspiring those who continue to shape South Africa’s future.
The message behind I AM HER is straightforward yet deeply meaningful. It recognises women as the backbone of families, communities and the nation itself. It also serves as a reminder that the courage displayed by the women of 1956 continues to live on in every generation that chooses to rise, lead, create and overcome adversity.
As the country prepares to commemorate 70 years since the historic march, I AM HER seeks to become more than a soundtrack for Women’s Month. It stands as a celebration of South African women whose strength continues to shape the country’s story.
