SAPS Colonel Ismail Dawood Surrenders After Sandhurst Raid in Extortion Case
A senior South African police officer once trusted with some of the country’s most sensitive crime fighting operations has handed himself over to authorities after a dramatic police search linked to an extortion investigation.
South African Police Service (SAPS) Crime Intelligence Colonel Ismail Dawood surrendered at Sandton Police Station on Monday after briefly speaking to eNCA reporters, following an earlier raid by the Gauteng Anti Corruption Unit at his Sandhurst townhouse complex in Johannesburg.
The move came after authorities issued a warrant of arrest for Dawood on an extortion related charge. Police had searched for him after he failed to appear at an arranged surrender, prompting officers to conduct a search at his Sandhurst residence.
His lawyer, Advocate Du Plessis, later confirmed that Dawood would voluntarily hand himself over while accompanied by legal representatives.
The allegations against Dawood have not been tested in court, and the investigation remains ongoing.

On Sunday, reports emerged that Dawood had an active warrant of arrest after he did not appear at Sandton Police Station as previously arranged.
Members of the Gauteng Anti Corruption Unit then conducted a search operation at his Sandhurst townhouse complex as part of efforts to locate him.
His legal representatives maintained that Dawood was not attempting to evade authorities and remained prepared to cooperate with investigators.
The colonel was expected to appear before authorities with his lawyers and seek bail following his surrender.
