Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has made one thing unmistakably clear as preparations for the new season gather momentum. Before his side can dream of lifting more trophies, they must first become far more difficult to break down.

The Moroccan coach has identified defensive organisation as the cornerstone of his project, insisting that success begins with discipline, structure and collective responsibility. After a campaign that delivered three trophies and raised expectations around the club, Ouaddou is determined to build a team capable of sustaining that success rather than simply repeating it.

For the new Pirates boss, creating a winning side is about much more than individual talent. It starts with building a foundation that every player understands and commits to.

“This is an important area for me because I used to play as a defender. I believe that if you want to win trophies, you must first build a solid foundation,” said Ouaddou.

His philosophy extends far beyond the back four. Ouaddou believes defending is a collective responsibility, with every player expected to understand their role when the team is without possession.

“When we talk about defending, we are not just talking about the back four,” he explained. “We are talking about the entire team. We must all know when to press the opponent, where, and how, so that we can win the ball back.”

That shared understanding, he believes, could make the difference between competing for honours and falling short.

Ouaddou has challenged his players to think as one unit on the pitch, ensuring every decision is synchronised when the opposition has possession.

“I always tell them that if all 11 players can answer these three questions at the same time, we stand a much better chance of winning the ball back and remaining solid.”

His comments offer a glimpse into the standards being set behind the scenes as Pirates continue their pre season preparations.

Despite taking positives from this week’s friendly against Córdoba, Ouaddou admitted there was one moment that prevented him from leaving completely satisfied.

“I am happy with how the team carried themselves today, but I cannot be completely satisfied because we conceded a goal,” he said.

That reaction reflects the level of detail the new coach is demanding. While the performance pleased him, the concession reinforced the work that still lies ahead before the competitive campaign begins.

With expectations soaring after last season’s success, every decision made during pre season will come under scrutiny. Ouaddou appears fully aware of the pressure that comes with leading one of South Africa’s biggest clubs.

His message is consistent. A united team, disciplined defending and collective commitment will be the platform on which Orlando Pirates hope to build another successful season. If his players embrace that philosophy, the Buccaneers could once again find themselves firmly in the hunt for silverware.
