IDAC AND NPA CAUGHT OFF GUARD AS VUSIMUZI “CAT” MATLALA WITHDRAWS FROM PLEA DEAL
In a dramatic twist in the R228 million SAPS Medicare24 corruption case, Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala has withdrawn from his plea and sentence agreement with the State, reportedly catching prosecutors by surprise.
According to proceedings in the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Court, the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) only became aware on Monday morning that Matlala intended to abandon the plea agreement.
The development means the State can no longer rely on any admissions, statements or undertakings that formed part of the abandoned plea agreement. Those contents cannot simply be used against Matlala after the withdrawal, and prosecutors will now have to continue their case without the benefit of that agreement.
Matlala is expected to be rejoined as Accused No. 1 in the main fraud, corruption and money laundering trial linked to the controversial SAPS Medicare24 tender.
The move follows the court’s earlier rejection of the proposed plea agreement after finding the recommended effective eight-year prison sentence was too lenient. The magistrate indicated that a substantially harsher sentence would be appropriate if a plea agreement were to proceed.
