Free State Police Arrest 1,015 Suspects in Major Operation Shanela II Crime Crackdown

Free State police arrests, Operation Shanela II

Free State police have arrested more than 1,000 suspects and recovered drugs, illegal alcohol and suspected stolen copper cables during a major crime crackdown across the province.

A wide ranging police operation across the Free State has resulted in the arrest of 1,015 suspects, including 308 wanted individuals linked to serious crimes such as murder, rape and assault.

The arrests were made during weekly planned Operation Shanela II deployments, where detectives carried out targeted track and tracing operations against wanted suspects while multidisciplinary policing teams were deployed to identified crime hotspots across the province.

Among those apprehended were 22 suspects wanted in connection with rape cases and 10 suspects linked to sexual offences. Police also arrested seven individuals wanted for murder, 11 for attempted murder and 67 suspects accused of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The suspects are expected to appear before various courts in the coming days.

High density police operations sweep across Free State

The arrests formed part of a large scale high visibility deployment involving different law enforcement teams working together to disrupt criminal activity.

During the operation, officers conducted thousands of policing actions, including:

  • 5,350 high visibility patrols
  • 13,227 stop and search operations
  • 645 inspections at licensed liquor premises
  • 147 compliance inspections at second hand dealers
  • 56 inspections at scrapyards and recycling facilities
  • 76 visits to spaza shops and informal businesses
  • 2,831 farm visits conducted with the Department of Home Affairs and Department of Employment and Labour

Authorities said the coordinated approach was aimed at increasing police visibility, enforcing compliance and targeting individuals involved in serious and organised crime.

Drugs, alcohol and stolen copper cables seized

During the operation, police seized significant quantities of suspected illegal substances and goods believed to be linked to criminal activities.

Officers confiscated 703 grams of Tik, also known as crystal methamphetamine, along with 59 Mandrax tablets.

The team also recovered:

  • 950.68 litres of alcohol beverages
  • 108 packets of tobacco
  • 305 kilograms of suspected stolen copper cables

The seizures are expected to support further investigations into illegal drug networks, unlicensed trading activities and infrastructure related crimes.

Police promise continued action in crime hotspots

The South African Police Service said Operation Shanela II will continue across the Free State, with further deployments planned in areas identified as crime hotspots.

The ongoing operations form part of efforts to trace wanted suspects, prevent violent crime and strengthen law enforcement presence in communities across the province.

With hundreds of wanted criminals already removed from the streets, police officials say the focus remains on sustained operations to improve public safety and bring offenders before the courts.
