Andrea Johnson Misses Madlanga Commission Hearing After Emergency Hospitalisation

The highly anticipated appearance of Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) head Advocate Andrea Johnson before the Madlanga Commission was unexpectedly postponed on Monday after it emerged that she had been rushed to hospital on Sunday night.

The sudden development brought the Commission’s proceedings to a halt, forcing an adjournment and delaying what was expected to be one of the inquiry’s most closely watched testimonies.

Johnson was due to answer questions relating to evidence already presented before the Commission, including allegations surrounding the operations of IDAC and its relationship with other law enforcement agencies. Her testimony was expected to shed further light on issues that have attracted significant public attention.

The Commission has recently heard evidence concerning senior IDAC investigator Suneel Bellochun, who faces allegations of extorting money from foreign shopkeepers.

Bellochun has not been found guilty of any criminal offence, and the allegations remain under investigation.

Johnson is also expected to respond to allegations of misconduct and claims that she interfered in an assault case involving suspended Crime Intelligence deputy head Major General Feroz Khan.

Those allegations have not been tested or determined by any court or tribunal, and no findings have been made against Johnson.

Another major focus of the Commission has been evidence pointing to possible institutional tensions between the South African Police Service (SAPS), IDAC and the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID). Evidence leaders have been examining whether these alleged rivalries affected investigations into corruption and organised crime.

Johnson’s testimony is widely expected to provide greater clarity on the relationship between the country’s key law enforcement bodies and how they handled several high profile investigations.

For now, however, those questions remain unanswered.

The Commission emphasised that all allegations presented during the hearings remain subject to ongoing examination. No final findings have been made against any of the individuals implicated.

Following Johnson’s absence, the Madlanga Commission postponed Monday’s proceedings and is expected to resume on Tuesday with a new witness scheduled to testify.
