Peter Shalulile reveals why he left Mamelodi Sundowns after six trophy-filled years
After six unforgettable years filled with goals, silverware and record-breaking performances, Peter Shalulile has finally revealed why he chose to walk away from Mamelodi Sundowns.
The Namibian striker, who established himself as one of the most lethal forwards in South African football, says the decision was driven by one simple ambition: the desire to play regular football again.
Shalulile’s departure marks the end of a remarkable chapter at Chloorkop, where he became a fan favourite and one of the club’s most reliable performers. Yet, despite the trophies and personal milestones, the 32-year-old felt the time had come to seek a fresh challenge.
Having joined Sundowns from Highlands Park in 2020, Shalulile leaves as one of the club’s modern greats. During his six-year stay, he made 228 appearances, scored an outstanding 107 goals and registered 27 assists across all competitions.
Reflecting on his journey, the striker described his time at the club as one of the defining periods of his career.
“The journey has been great. It’s been amazing,” said Shalulile.
“Coming to a club where there are top players, it’s difficult but with hard work, listening and dedication, I’ve managed to achieve a number of records and win trophies, including the league, MTN8 and Nedbank Cup.”
Behind the celebrations, however, were moments that tested his resilience.
Shalulile admitted there were periods when injuries disrupted his momentum and goals became difficult to find. Rather than allowing those setbacks to define him, he focused on improving behind the scenes.
“There was a time when injuries came, and more importantly, when the goals stopped coming,” he said.
“That was the time I needed to dig deep within myself. Regardless of not scoring, I still went to the gym and continued with my finishing drills.”
As competition for places intensified at Sundowns, the experienced striker began evaluating his future with his representatives. Those conversations ultimately led him to make a difficult request to the club’s leadership.
“I decided that the best thing for me was to ask the club and the president to give me an opportunity to showcase my talent somewhere else.”
While his exit closes an important chapter, Shalulile made it clear there is no bitterness between himself and the Betway Premiership champions.
Instead, he expressed gratitude to everyone who played a role in his successful spell, from the supporters in the stands to the club’s management.
“Thank you to the supporters. They have been amazing, always singing and giving us energy.”
“I’d also like to thank the chairman, the president and everyone who brought me to Sundowns. I appreciate everything they have done for me.”
His farewell also carried a message that may leave the door open for a future return.
“It’s not a goodbye. You never know where I’ll end up. Life is unpredictable, and I thank everyone from the bottom of my heart.”
Although his next destination has not yet been confirmed, Shalulile is already attracting significant interest. He has been linked with a move to Zimbabwean side Scotland FC, while Orlando Pirates have also been mentioned as a possible destination.
Wherever he lands, one thing is certain. Peter Shalulile leaves Mamelodi Sundowns not because his ambition has faded, but because he believes there is still more football, more goals and another chapter waiting to be written.
