World Youth Development Forum 2026

South African youth representatives join world leaders in Wuhan as global conversations on jobs, climate change and innovation take centre stage

WUHAN, CHINA | The spotlight has turned to Wuhan as young leaders from across the globe gather for the 2026 World Youth Development Forum, a major international event focused on shaping solutions for some of the world’s most pressing challenges.

Representing South Africa at the high-profile gathering are African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) Deputy President Francisco Dyantyi and National Executive Committee member Douglas Ngobeni, who have joined delegates from numerous countries in discussions aimed at advancing youth-driven development.

Held under the theme “Youth Drives Development for a Better World”, the forum brings together policymakers, academics, youth organisations and international institutions to explore how young people can play a greater role in building a more sustainable and inclusive future.

The multi-day event officially opened in Wuhan this week and is expected to serve as a powerful platform for collaboration, innovation and global dialogue.

Youth at the Centre of Global Change

As economic uncertainty, climate challenges and technological disruption continue to reshape societies worldwide, the forum places young people at the heart of conversations about the future.

Delegates are participating in a series of roundtable discussions, matchmaking sessions and parallel dialogues focused on critical development priorities.

Key topics on the agenda include:

  • Climate action and green development
  • Employment and youth entrepreneurship
  • Digital economy and technological innovation
  • Quality education
  • Youth-friendly cities

Organisers say the forum is designed to encourage practical solutions and partnerships that can help young people contribute meaningfully to social and economic progress.

International Collaboration Takes Centre Stage

The World Youth Development Forum has attracted representatives from United Nations agencies, universities, research institutions and youth organisations from around the world.

The gathering provides an opportunity for participants to exchange ideas, build networks and explore collaborative approaches to global development challenges.

A major focus of this year’s programme is the role of youth leadership in advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with delegates expected to showcase initiatives and strategies that are already making a difference in communities across the globe.

South Africa’s Presence on the Global Stage

The participation of Dyantyi and Ngobeni places South African youth voices within an important international conversation at a time when issues such as unemployment, education and economic inclusion remain central concerns for many young people.

Their attendance also reflects South Africa’s continued engagement in global youth development platforms that seek to strengthen cooperation and create opportunities for future generations.

The 2026 World Youth Development Forum is scheduled to run until 20 June, with delegates expected to continue discussions on building innovative, sustainable and youth-led solutions for a rapidly changing world.
