Tragedy in Limpopo as Poisoned Brothers Laid to Rest While Mother Remains Behind Bars
MADABANI, LIMPOPO – Grief and heartbreak have engulfed Madabani Village in Limpopo’s Vhembe District as family members, community residents and government officials gather to bid farewell to two young brothers whose deaths have shocked the province.
The funeral service for the boys, aged six and nine, was underway on Saturday as mourners struggled to come to terms with a tragedy that has left an entire community searching for answers.
Among those attending the funeral was Limpopo MEC for Social Development, Florence Radzilani, who joined grieving relatives and residents during the emotional proceedings.
The boys’ deaths have become the centre of a murder case that has drawn widespread public attention across the province.
Mother Abandons Bail Application
The children’s 27-year-old mother, Ntanganedzeni Siphugu, appeared briefly before the Tshilwavhusiku Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 12 June 2026, where she abandoned her bail application.
Siphugu is facing two counts of murder following allegations that she administered a poisonous substance to her two minor children at Madabani Village on 1 June 2026.
According to information presented before the court, the children became ill the following day.
One of the boys was rushed to a nearby clinic, where he was certified dead. The devastating ordeal did not end there.
When family members later returned home, they allegedly discovered that the second child had also died.
The deaths triggered a police investigation that ultimately led to Siphugu’s arrest and subsequent prosecution.
Community Struggles to Process the Loss
As funeral hymns echoed through Madabani Village on Saturday, the emotional weight of the tragedy was evident among mourners gathered to pay their final respects.
The deaths of the two young brothers have left residents stunned, with many still trying to understand how such a devastating incident could have unfolded within a family home.
The case has sparked widespread concern and renewed discussions around child protection, family support systems and mental health challenges affecting vulnerable households.
Case Postponed for Further Investigation
The Tshilwavhusiku Magistrate’s Court postponed the matter to 28 August 2026 to allow for further investigations.
Siphugu remains in custody pending her next court appearance.
The National Prosecuting Authority said it will continue to present the State’s case as the matter moves through the criminal justice system.
For now, the focus in Madabani Village remains on two young lives cut tragically short, as a grieving community lays the brothers to rest while awaiting answers from the courts.
