Arrest Made in Nhlamulo Sambo Murder as KwaNonqaba Grapples with Deadly Violence
Police breakthrough brings hope amid tensions and bloodshed in Mossel Bay informal settlements
A major breakthrough has been made in the murder investigation of 18-year-old Nhlamulo Sambo, whose tragic death sent shockwaves through the KwaNonqaba community over the weekend.
Police confirmed that a 23-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday evening in connection with Sambo’s murder, following an intensive investigation led by local detectives who worked around the clock to track down leads.
The arrest comes after days of fear, unrest and uncertainty in parts of Mossel Bay, where violent incidents have left several people dead and dozens displaced.
Teen found stabbed to death outside shack
According to police, officers were called to the New Rest informal settlement in KwaNonqaba at approximately 03:00 on Sunday morning after reports of a body lying outside a shack.
Upon arrival, they discovered the body of Nhlamulo Sambo, who had sustained fatal stab wounds.
Paramedics declared the teenager dead at the scene shortly after their arrival.
The circumstances surrounding the attack immediately triggered a murder investigation, with detectives launching an urgent search for suspects.
Their efforts yielded results on Tuesday evening when a 23-year-old man was arrested in the area. The suspect is expected to appear in court once formal charges have been finalised.
Violence erupts across KwaNonqaba and Asla Park
The arrest comes as the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Western Cape sought to clarify reports surrounding a wave of violence that erupted in KwaNonqaba and neighbouring informal settlements last week.
According to SAPS, members of the George Public Order Police, supported by local police units, responded on Friday to sporadic outbreaks of violence in the Asla Park informal settlement.
During the unrest, approximately 55 shacks were allegedly set alight by a group of people, leaving numerous residents displaced and scrambling for safety.
Police, fire services and disaster management teams were deployed to contain the situation and restore order.
Multiple deaths under investigation
The violence has also been linked to two separate murder investigations.
Police said that in the early hours of Saturday morning, officers responded to a scene where the body of a 27-year-old man was found with multiple injuries.
A short while later, another man who had sustained assault-related injuries was declared dead on arrival at a local hospital.
Investigators later established that the two deceased men, aged 27 and 43, were Mozambican nationals.
No arrests have yet been made in connection with those murders, and investigations remain ongoing.
Five arrests linked to unrest
Authorities have confirmed that five people have been arrested since the violence erupted.
Two suspects were charged with public violence and appeared in court on Monday, where they were granted bail of R1,000 each.
Three additional suspects are expected to face charges relating to the possession of suspected stolen property.
Police have reiterated that while citizens have a constitutional right to protest, any acts of violence, intimidation or criminal conduct will be met with decisive action.
“The South African Police Service respects the right of citizens to protest; however, those who embark on such action are urged to do so within the confines of the law,” SAPS said in a statement.
Police urge calm as tensions ease
Law enforcement authorities have appealed to community leaders and residents to avoid spreading unverified information, warning that rumours can fuel panic and further destabilise already tense communities.
Police deployments remain on high alert across the affected areas as authorities work to restore calm and prevent further violence.
Encouragingly, no new incidents have been reported since Monday.
For the family of Nhlamulo Sambo, however, the pain of losing a young life remains profound. While the arrest marks a significant step forward in the pursuit of justice, many questions surrounding the violence that has gripped KwaNonqaba and the surrounding communities remain unanswered.
