Former Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs star Khama Billiat has finally opened up about his lucrative spell at Naturena, saying Amakhosi made sure he was rewarded handsomely.
Billiat, who made the high-profile switch from Sundowns to Chiefs in 2018, admitted that reports about his massive salary package were not far from the truth.
Speaking on Afrik-Foot’s Off The Pitch Chat podcast, the former Chiefs forward praised the club for supporting him financially during his five-year stay.
“They really took care of me, and I really appreciate Kaizer Chiefs; they were there for me,” said Billiat.
“I am not sure how much others were getting paid, but I was paid well, and I really appreciate it.”
The former Zimbabwe international then doubled down on just how well Chiefs treated some of their senior stars.
“They paid a couple of us very well. I believe Kaizer Chiefs pays everyone very well. I was one of the highest paid at Kaizer Chiefs compared to a lot of other teams.”
While Billiat’s salary reportedly matched his superstar status, his performances at Naturena never quite reached the explosive levels fans witnessed during his glory years at Sundowns.
Across 126 appearances for Chiefs, Billiat scored 24 goals and registered 29 assists. Respectable numbers, but still below the frightening standards he set at Chloorkop.
At Sundowns, Billiat was one of the most feared attackers in African football. In 144 matches for Masandawana, he produced 48 goals and 43 assists while helping the club dominate domestically and continentally.
During his spell with Sundowns, Billiat won:
* Three league titles
* A CAF Champions League title
Operating from wide positions or just behind the striker, Billiat combined blistering pace, creativity, and clinical finishing to become one of the PSL’s standout stars.
His time at the Chiefs, however, proved far more complicated. Despite moments of brilliance and flashes of the old magic, trophies never arrived, and many supporters were left wondering whether they had truly seen the best version of Billiat in gold and black.
One thing, though, is beyond debate. Regardless of the silverware drought, Naturena ensured the former superstar lived very comfortably.
