Manqoba Mngqithi has raised concerns about Bafana Bafana’s defensive stability ahead of their return to the FIFA World Cup, despite praising the progress made under head coach Hugo Broos.
Broos has guided South Africa back to the global stage for the first time since 2002, while also leading the team to consecutive Africa Cup of Nations appearances, including an impressive semi-final finish in Ivory Coast.
However, speaking on the Arrows Up Back Through Podcast, Mngqithi admitted that while the team has improved significantly, there are still key areas that raise concern.
“And I believe Hugo has done very well for the country from the beginning up until now. He has been exceptional… but there are areas in that national team that I ask myself serious questions about,” said Mngqithi.
His primary concern lies in central defence, where he is unsure whether the current options can cope with the level of pressure expected.
