A new wave of South African hip hop talent has officially arrived.
The University of Cotton Fest Creative Programme has unveiled the highly anticipated Cotton Fest Mixtape, a powerful body of work born from months of creative development, collaboration, and raw artistic expression.
The project was introduced during an exclusive listening session at The Cotton Fest Exchange in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, where rising artists delivered a sound that signals the future of the genre.
Built through an intensive music bootcamp, the mixtape brings together the Class of 2026 and Open Mic alumni from 2022 to 2025, who connected, experimented, and refined their craft under the mentorship of acclaimed producer MashBeatz.
MashBeatz described the experience as eye-opening, praising the hunger and authenticity of the young creatives.
“I got to discover a lot of dope talent. These are the new stars of tomorrow. Their journey starts here — giving them exposure and a voice,” he said.
He added that the passion behind the music goes beyond performance.
“You can feel that it is bigger than just rapping or singing. It is about changing their situations. There is real hunger, real purpose, and real talent.”
Each track on the Cotton Fest Mixtape reflects identity, ambition, and innovation, capturing both individual journeys and a shared vision to push South African hip hop forward.
From early studio sessions to a fully realised project, the mixtape represents months of late nights, discipline, and intentional creation — a true testament to the programme’s impact.
Programme leader Bianca Naidoo emphasised that the initiative is about more than just music.
“This is about creating a platform where young creatives can be seen, heard, and celebrated. This generation is fearless, original, and unapologetically authentic,” she said.
The Cotton Fest Mixtape is more than a release — it is a cultural statement.
It reinforces the University of Cotton Fest Creative Programme’s role as a key incubator of talent, shaping the next generation of artists while keeping the spirit of hip hop alive in South Africa.
With this drop, one message is clear:
The future of SA hip hop is not coming — it is already here.
