YouTube updates monetisation guidance for news reports depicting death
YouTube has announced an update to its advertising rules that could be significant for news publishers covering crime, war, disasters and other events involving fatalities.
The platform has added new guidance to its Advertiser-Friendly Content Guidelines for August 2026, specifically addressing the monetisation status of depictions of death in educational, documentary and news-reporting content.
The change falls under YouTube’s Violent Content advertising rules.
News publishers frequently face difficult editorial decisions when reporting events in which bodies, fatal injuries or the aftermath of violence may appear in footage.
Those decisions can also have financial consequences because videos deemed unsuitable for advertisers may receive limited or no advertising revenue.
YouTube has previously recognised journalistic context in its monetisation policies.
In earlier updates, the company expanded advertising eligibility for some educational, documentary and news content involving violent interactions, sensitive events and other difficult subject matter.
The August 2026 update now specifically addresses depictions of death.
However, the announcement should not be interpreted as allowing unrestricted monetisation of graphic death footage.
YouTube’s announcement says the company is clarifying the monetisation status of this material, while its wider advertiser-friendly framework continues to distinguish between legitimate contextual reporting and content presented primarily for shock value.
For digital newsrooms, presentation will therefore remain crucial.
Publishers should consider whether imagery is necessary to tell the story, whether graphic material can be avoided, the prominence given to violent imagery and whether sufficient news or documentary context is immediately apparent.
For organisations such as MDNtv that routinely cover courts, violent crime and breaking public-interest events, the change is particularly relevant because advertising restrictions can significantly affect revenue from hard-news journalism.
The key question will now be how YouTube applies the clarified rules in practice when determining whether individual news videos receive full, limited or no advertising.
MDNtv will monitor YouTube’s detailed enforcement guidance and creator reports as the August update is implemented.
