KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has publicly withdrawn his allegations that former Police Minister Bheki Cele received money from businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.
The development was announced during a parliamentary inquiry into alleged corruption within the South African Police Service (SAPS). Evidence leader Advocate Norman Arendse SC told the ad hoc committee that Mkhwanazi had sent a message formally retracting his earlier statements.
“The allegation is withdrawn with due apologies from Mkhwanazi for any inconvenience or hurt caused,” Arendse said, addressing Cele during the session.
Cele, who appeared before the committee to answer questions, accepted the apology but expressed surprise over the initial claims, insisting there was no truth to them.
Just two weeks ago, Mkhwanazi had accused Cele of indirectly receiving money from Matlala, alleging that the funds were transferred through a third-party account. The claims were part of broader testimony suggesting the existence of “cartels” linked to senior police figures, including suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and Deputy Commissioner General Shadrack Sibiya.
Mkhwanazi’s retraction has sparked fresh debate over the credibility of previous corruption claims made during the parliamentary hearings. The inquiry continues to investigate allegations of deep-rooted misconduct within SAPS.
