Two members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) and a taxi driver carrying more than 20 passengers were arrested for drunk driving during weekend law enforcement operations in KwaZulu-Natal.
Authorities confirmed that a total of 27 people were arrested in just two large-scale roadblocks held on Saturday night.
One of the arrested officers, based at Port Edward, recorded an alcohol level more than six times the legal limit. A second officer from Southport Police Station was also caught, testing four times over the limit.
In Ladysmith, Road Traffic Inspectorate officers intercepted a minibus taxi overloaded with 24 passengers—eight more than legally allowed. The driver was found to be five times over the alcohol limit.
Officials described the arrests of police officers as deeply concerning, stressing that those tasked with enforcing the law should not be the ones breaking it. They also noted a recent case where a senior public prosecutor was caught driving under the influence.
The Department of Transport said it will prepare a detailed report for the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Cluster to ensure accountability and stronger collaboration among law enforcement agencies.
Authorities praised traffic officers for their commitment to safer roads and vowed to protect the public from reckless drivers.
