Israel’s defense minister has warned that Gaza City could be wiped out unless Hamas agrees to disarm and release all hostages still held in the territory.
The warning followed the Israeli cabinet’s approval of a large-scale assault on Gaza City, despite mounting opposition at home and abroad.
Earlier in the week, Hamas signaled acceptance of a ceasefire proposal brokered by Qatari and Egyptian mediators, which included a 60-day truce and the release of half of the remaining hostages. However, Israel rejected this plan, insisting instead on the release of every hostage and an end to the war on terms favorable to its security.
Officials estimate that of the 50 hostages still unaccounted for, only about 20 may still be alive after nearly two years of war. Israeli negotiators are expected to resume indirect talks once a meeting venue is agreed.
During a visit to military command in southern Israel, the prime minister announced that plans had been authorized for the army to take control of Gaza City. He stressed that defeating Hamas and freeing the hostages were inseparable goals.
Reinforcing the government’s stance, the defense minister declared that Hamas would face devastating consequences if it refused Israel’s conditions, warning that Gaza City could meet the same fate as other areas already reduced to ruins.
Meanwhile, the military has ordered preparations for the evacuation of Gaza City’s one million residents, urging civilians to move south ahead of the planned offensive. Aid groups and international organizations have raised alarm, saying many people are unwilling or unable to leave.
Humanitarian agencies warn that intensifying bombardment and mass displacement risk worsening an already dire crisis. Food shortages are extreme, and the threat of famine looms over the territory.
The conflict began after the Hamas-led assault on southern Israel in October 2023, which left about 1,200 people dead and hundreds taken hostage. Since then, tens of thousands in Gaza have been killed, and large parts of the enclave have been destroyed.
