A nationwide manhunt is underway for Jabulani Moyo, a trial-awaiting prisoner accused of shooting and killing two police detectives in Roodepoort, Gauteng, on Friday, August 8.
The killings happened as officers were transporting Moyo from court. Police say he managed to take a firearm from one of the detectives and used it to carry out the attack. He remains armed and is considered extremely dangerous.
The National Police Commissioner has deployed maximum resources to track him down, including crime intelligence units, detectives, specialised tracking teams, and the HAWKS. Authorities are urging the public not to hide Moyo and to report any information on his whereabouts immediately.
Police officials have warned that an attack on law enforcement is an attack on the state itself. They have vowed to bring Moyo to justice and prevent him from committing further crimes.
The Acting Police Minister condemned the killings and extended condolences to the families, colleagues, and friends of the slain officers, calling their deaths a stark reminder of the risks police face in the line of duty.
The tragedy comes just weeks before the annual SAPS Commemoration Day, when the country honours officers who have died while serving their communities.
