East London, 31 July 2025 – In a powerful example of collaborative healthcare, Life Beacon Bay Hospital with three of its resident urologists and a team of anesthetists, has joined forces with Frere
Hospital to provide pro-bono surgeries for patients on the public sector’s surgical waiting list. This initiative, driven by Dr Jeff John, urologist at Frere Hospital, and his team of medical officers – Drs Keri Bhana, Noma Mngqi, Kaylyn Stride, Návan van Jaarsveld, Zingisa Apleni and Dr Carl Adriaan Hugo is providing much-needed surgery to urology patients who have been waiting for essential procedures—some for many months and even years.
Urologists, Drs Dap Louw, Fred Tyler and Rudiger Hayden, performed 14 elective procedures at Life Beacon Bay Hospital. A further 11 procedures were performed at another private hospital in East London.
The urologists participating in this effort have generously donated their time, while Life Beacon Bay Hospital has contributed operating room time, staff, and other resources.
“Frere Hospital provides urology services for more than three million people in the province, and there will inherently be a waiting list. This initiative is a clear example of what can be achieved when the public and private sectors work together,” said Dr John. “By pooling our resources and expertise, we are making a real difference for patients who urgently need care.”
Lyndee Hartwanger, hospital manager, Life Beacon Bay Hospital, said, “We are honoured to give back to the community in this way. Supporting access to healthcare for vulnerable patients aligns with our values, and this partnership demonstrates what can be achieved when different sectors collaborate with a shared purpose.”
This collaboration underscores a shared commitment to patient care, dignity, and community wellbeing.
All partners involved have expressed pride in being part of a project that improves access to care and restores hope for patients in need.
