Police have dealt a major blow to a suspected gun-smuggling syndicate after intercepting a shipment of 30 unlicensed firearms.
In a carefully planned operation on Monday night, law enforcement teams, including crime intelligence units and special task forces, moved in on two men in the Meyersdal area. The suspects, aged 34 and 45, had been under surveillance for several days as authorities tracked their movements across provincial lines.
When the pair collected the cache of firearms — all unlicensed 9mm pistols — officers moved in and made the arrest. The guns were reportedly being prepared for transport to the Western Cape, where they were likely intended for use in criminal activities.
Further investigation revealed links between the suspects and other firearm-related crimes in both Gauteng and the Western Cape. Authorities say this bust may have disrupted a wider network involved in the illegal gun trade.
Both men remain in custody and are facing charges related to illegal possession and trafficking of firearms. Investigations are still ongoing as police work to uncover and dismantle the rest of the syndicate.
