Former President Jacob Zuma is heading back to court—this time to challenge his expulsion from the African National Congress (ANC). He’s asking the court to rule that the decision to remove him from the party was both unlawful and unconstitutional.
Zuma’s legal action comes just as the ANC marks the 70th anniversary of the Freedom Charter, a moment many see as symbolic.
In documents filed at the Johannesburg High Court, Zuma claims that the party rule used to expel him—identified as rule 25.17.42—is at odds with the country’s Constitution.
Meanwhile, Zuma’s new political home, Umkhonto Wesizwe, has voiced strong support for his decision to fight back, stating that it stands firmly behind him as he seeks to restore his 65-year-long membership in the ANC.
