Shadrack Mokoena (51) appeared before the Pretoria Regional Court on 05 June 2025 where he was convicted and sentenced for fraud and corruption.
Hawks Spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Singo said his conviction originates from an incident that took place during the period of 2022. It was reported that the accused approached a Nedbank official to assist them in opening the fraudulent bank account in the name of identified foreign nationals. It was further reported that the accused was part of a group that targeted foreign nationals accounts at Nedbank with the intention to take control of the funds in the identified accounts by opening other fraudulent bank accounts to transfer the funds to. The accused enticed the bank official with a promise of gratification if she assisted them to open those fraudulent bank account.
The bank official reported the matter to the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation team based in Pretoria, Head Office for further investigation. On 05 July 2022, Mokoena and his co-accused Maryna de Koker were arrested. They appeared in court on several occasions culminating in their conviction.
The court sentenced Mokoena to five years direct imprisonment on a count of corruption. He was further sentenced to five years imprisonment on a count of fraud wholly suspended for five years on condition that he is not convicted of the same offence during the period of suspension. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm. His co-accused Maryna de Koker is awaiting the sentence on 12 August 2025.
