Family seeks answers in SAPS Constable’s mysterious death
The family of Constable Cebekhulu Linda, one of three South African Police Service (SAPS) members who tragically died last month, is demanding clarity on the circumstances that led to his death.
Linda, 24, disappeared alongside fellow constables Boipelo Senoge, 20, and Keamogetswe Buys, 30, on April 23, 2025. The trio was en route from Bloemfontein to Limpopo in a white VW Polo when they vanished. Their bodies, along with two unidentified individuals, were discovered six days later submerged in the Hennops River in Centurion, Tshwane. The vehicle was recovered from the river on May 1.
Initial speculation from authorities pointed to a possible hijacking or kidnapping. However, SAPS has since ruled out foul play, with Deputy National Commissioner Lieutenant General Shadrack Sibiya citing poor weather conditions and excessive speed as the likely cause of the crash. Sibiya dismissed conspiracy theories, insisting the evidence supports an accident.
Despite this, the Linda family remains unconvinced. “Cebekhulu was a cautious driver,” said family spokesperson Sipho Linda. “It doesn’t make sense that he would be speeding, let alone driving on the far-left side of the road.” The family has also questioned the inconsistencies in early reports that suggested criminal activity, and while they now believe the incident was likely accidental, they want a full account of what happened.
The police have launched a forensic investigation to determine the exact sequence of events. Vehicle debris, including front and rear bumpers and a police reflector jacket belonging to Linda, were recovered from the river.
National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, and while no foul play is suspected at this stage, final conclusions await forensic analysis.
As the investigation continues, the Linda family prepares to lay Cebekhulu to rest on May 9 in Mangaung, holding on to hope that the truth will soon surface.
