Walter Sisulu University’s residence manager allegedly opened fire on students during a confrontation, killing one and injuring three others.
A routine protest at Walter Sisulu University’s Mthatha campus spiraled into tragedy on Tuesday when the institution’s residence manager allegedly opened fire on a group of students, killing one and injuring three others.
Eyewitnesses say the incident began outside the manager’s residence, where a group of students had gathered in protest. Tensions reportedly escalated as students began throwing stones. In response, the residence manager is alleged to have drawn a firearm and discharged multiple rounds into the crowd.
One student died at the scene. Three others sustained gunshot injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital, where at least one remains in critical condition.
In the chaos that followed, reports surfaced of students setting the manager’s vehicle on fire. The atmosphere on campus is described as tense and volatile.
Eastern Cape MEC for Community Safety, Xolile Nqatha, condemned the violence and urged the university community to remain calm.
Police have launched a formal investigation, and the campus remains under heightened security. As of Tuesday evening, Walter Sisulu University had yet to release an official statement, leaving many students and families desperate for answers.
