Dali Mpofu faces disciplinary inquiry over professional misconduct
According to Sunday Times, senior counsel Dali Mpofu is set to appear before the Legal Practice Council (LPC) for a disciplinary inquiry concerning seven charges of professional misconduct.
The allegations include tarnishing the reputation of the legal profession, violating the code of conduct for legal practitioners, defaming individuals, and neglecting his duties to the court. The inquiry stems from several incidents that have raised concerns about Mpofu’s conduct.
In March 2021, during the State Capture Commission, Mpofu was criticized for telling Minister Pravin Gordhan’s legal counsel, advocate Michelle le Roux, to “shut up” during proceedings. Chairperson Raymond Zondo described Mpofu’s behavior as “unacceptable.”
Additionally, in March 2022, the Johannesburg Society of Advocates found Mpofu guilty of breaching its ethical code. He was given five days to address the society regarding appropriate disciplinary actions. Mpofu labeled the ruling as “ridiculous” and signaled his intention to appeal.
As of April 9, 2025, the LPC’s disciplinary inquiry is still ongoing, with further details to emerge as the proceedings unfold. The outcome will emphasize the LPC’s role in overseeing South Africa’s legal profession and ensuring adherence to ethical standards.
