Treasury allocates R37 million for genocide case against Israel
On March 15, 2025, the Treasury allocated an additional R37 million to support the country’s ongoing genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), bringing the total funding to over R130 million.
The case, now in its second year, accuses Israel of committing genocide in Gaza, a claim South Africa is pursuing under the 1948 Genocide Convention.
The funding has sparked divided opinions.
Some South Africans view it as a strong stance on human rights, with President Cyril Ramaphosa and other officials condemning Israel’s actions in Gaza as “blatant genocide.”
However, critics argue that the focus on international legal proceedings is misplaced, given South Africa’s domestic challenges, including a 33% unemployment rate and underfunded schools.
For comparison, the R37 million could fund local projects like building new classrooms or addressing housing shortages.
Israel denies the genocide accusations, asserting its actions are a matter of self-defense. The case continues to generate significant international debate.
