Media Statement NELSPRUIT – Three suspects, aged between 32 and 36 were not granted bail at Middleburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday after they were arrested for common robbery on Saturday, 16 November 2024. The suspects, Keletso Masihla (32), Tebogo Mailula (34) and Dumisani Mohlala (36) allegedly gave a lift to two siblings on the N11 road from Grobblersdal to Middleburg direction. Whilst they were approaching Loskop dam, one of the suspects instructed the siblings to give them all their possessions. One of the victims immediately alighted from the vehicle whilst it was still in motion, and sustained some minor injuries. The driver immediately stopped. The suspects were distracted by a vehicle that appeared when the robbery was still in progress. The suspects got into their vehicle and fled the scene, taking along the victim’s bags. The victims were offered a lift by the other car, and a high speed chase ensured. Whilst they were still chasing the suspects’ vehicle, they managed to phone Middleburg police for assistance. The suspects’ vehicle was spotted and stopped by the Police. All three suspects were cornered and arrested then appeared in court on charges of common robbery case in Middleburg yesterday, Monday 18 November 2024. The suspects remained in custody and are expected to make their second court appearance on 25 November 2024. The Acting Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi has warned members of the public about the dangers of hitchhiking for both motorists and pedestrians. “We had incidents of victims robbed of their belongings like in this instance. We also had incidents of murder and hijacking whereby drivers were targeted as they were assisting hitchhikers. If possible, people should refrain from this habit especially now as people will be moving from one area to another whereby criminals take advantage of this period,” warned the General.
