WESTERN CAPE – Consistent efforts to deal with the perpetrators of justice were rewarded when eight suspects were detained in separate incidents on various charges related to the possession of a hijacked motor vehicle, possession of unlicensed and prohibited firearms and ammunition as well as the possession of presumed stolen property and cash. Police members of Maitland Flying Squad conducted focussed patrols on Saturday 01 June 2024 in the Maitland area when they were alerted about a presumed hijacked motor vehicle at a nearby premises. The members operationalised the information and proceeded to the identified address in Kensington Road at around 23:00. Upon arrival, they saw a grey Opel Corsa which fitted the description and restrained the three males close to the motor vehicle. Further investigation revealed that the vehicle was hijacked in Parow earlier the same day. They detained the three males on a charge of possession of a hijacked motor vehicle. Meanwhile, police members of Operation Shanela deployed in the Western Cape to combat gang violence were busy with crime combatting activities in Nyanga policing precinct on Sunday 02 June 2024 when they responded to a shooting in progress in Browns Farm. They pursued information at their disposal and noticed a Toyota Avanza speeding away from the scene, which resulted in a high-speed chase. The police members forced the driver to stop the motor vehicle, searched him and in the process confiscated a 9mm pistol with ammunition which was found in his possession. The 34-year-old man was arrested and detained on a charge of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. In addition of above, Maitland Flying Squad members were busy with patrols in Koeberg Road, Milnerton on Sunday 02 June 2024 at around 20:50 when they spotted a suspicious motor vehicle speeding passed them. The members gave chase and instructed the driver of the motor vehicle to stop. This instruction was however disobeyed and the driver continued speeding with police in hot pursuit. The driver of the vehicle lost control where after the motor vehicle collided with a mini bus in Montague Gardens. The police members detained the four occupants who were found in possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition, presumed stolen property and cash
The suspects are expected to make their respective court appearances in the Cape Town and Philippi Magistrates’ courts on the mentioned charges, once charged.
