Media Statement NESLPRUIT – A male suspect (44) is due to appear at Mkhuhlu Magistrate’s Court today, Friday 03 May 2024 after Police reportedly caught him with a firearm and ammunition at Calcutta last week. According to a report, a task team consisting of members from Calcutta task team embarked on Operation Shanela where they were searching for suspects that were wanted by the Police, especially on serious cases, including armed robberies around Marite and the surrounding areas. It was during this operation when the men and women in Blue tactically proceeded to a certain house in the early hours of Tuesday, 23 April 2024 at about 00h00 am. The man was found in possession of a firearm with two ammunition. The serial number for the firearm was filed off. The man failed produce a licence for the firearm hence he was apprehended and charged accordingly. Police cannot rule out possibilities that the suspect could be involved in other criminal activities, including armed robberies carried out on the R40 Road however that would be left in the hands of the investigators to probe. The firearm will undergo ballistic testing to determine whether it was not previously used in the commission of crime elsewhere hence at this point, Police cannot rule out possibilities of adding more charges against the suspect as the investigation continues.
The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela has hailed the exceptional work done by Police in execution of during under Operation Shanela, which has yielded positive results since it began to be rolled out in the province.
