Three EFF MPs who have been charged by Parliament for disrupting President Cyril Ramaphosa’s question and answer sessions in June and August of last year. The MPs have pleaded not guilty to contempt of Parliament, raising concerns about the fairness of the disciplinary proceedings. The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) MPs argue that the powers and privileges committee conducting their disciplinary hearings has not been properly constituted due to the African National Congress’s (ANC) majority. Despite objections from the EFF, the hearings began on Monday, as the party’s attempt to interdict the process and force the Speaker to give evidence failed. Parliament’s decision to charge the MPs has sparked a heated debate, with the EFF alleging that the ANC, as the ruling party, cannot be unbiased in a matter involving its political opponents. Advocate Mfesane Ka-Siboto, representing the EFF, argued that having political opponents act as witnesses, prosecutors, and judges in their opponents’ case goes against the spirit and intent of the Constitution.
