Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi Launches Legal Battle Against Facebook Account Over Outcontext ‘Cranberry’ Video Clip
South Africa’s Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Mmamoloko Kubayi, has officially announced her intention to take legal action against a social media user following an alleged targeted cyberbullying and disinformation campaign.
According to an official media statement issued by the ministry on Friday, November 6, 2026, the legal proceedings will target an individual operating under the Facebook handle “Baas Kruger.”
The ministry stated that the account has repeatedly weaponized false claims to damage the Minister’s reputation, ignoring multiple prior requests to cease the behavior.
Left with “no other alternative,” Kubayi has escalated the matter to the courts to protect her dignity and hold the account holder accountable.
The legal standoff stems from a video clip circulating on social media platforms from a doorstep interview during the ANC’s Siyanqoba Rally in the Eastern Cape.
In the viral clip, Kubayi responds to a question posed by SABC journalist Samkele Maseko regarding the March and March movement being “squeezed like cranberries.”
Kubayi emphasized that the phrase “squeezed like cranberries” was introduced entirely by the reporter and was never uttered by Kubayi herself.
The statement slammed online narratives attributing the quote to the Minister as intentionally deceptive and out of context.
“The Minister will not allow this to go unchallenged,” the statement reads. ” Kubayi remains accountable for her statements, but attributing words she did not utter to her is unacceptable.”
