Limpopo Voter Arrested After Photographing and Posting Marked Ballot Paper Online
A 32-year-old man was arrested by Limpopo police yesterday after taking a photograph of his marked ballot paper inside the voting booth and posting it on social media.
According to law enforcement officials, the suspect cast his vote during yesterday’s elections and used his mobile phone to capture an image of his completed ballot paper.
By midday, the photograph—which clearly revealed his political choice—was discovered circulating on social media platforms, leading to his swift identification and arrest.
Authorities confirmed that the act violates strict electoral laws designed to protect the secrecy of the ballot. Under the Electoral Act, taking photographs of marked ballot papers or publishing them is a criminal offense.
Police also revealed that a second individual has been identified for capturing a photograph of their ballot paper inside a voting booth.
While this individual has not yet uploaded the image online, police officials stated they are actively monitoring the situation and are prepared to effect an arrest the moment the visual evidence is published.
Electoral authorities and police have issued a stern reminder to the public that cellphones and cameras are strictly prohibited inside the voting booths to preserve the integrity and secrecy of the democratic voting process.
