Hlungwani rules roost on controversial Soweto Derby refereeing calls
Another Soweto Derby, another VAR-free storm. Former PSL referee Victor Hlungwani says officials got two big decisions wrong in Orlando Pirates’ win over Kaizer Chiefs, and he has drawn the lines to prove it.
The most contentious moment came in the 24th minute, when Yanela Mbuthuma’s shot ricocheted off Thabo Moloisane and beat Brandon Petersen. Replays suggest Mbuthuma may have been offside when he received the pass, and Hlungwani, known as “The Principal,” says there is no doubt.
“Here we see Mbuthuma scoring a goal. When we draw the line, it will help us understand. Mbuthuma’s leg is on the line,” he said.
“(Inacio) Miguel’s leg is outside the line, therefore this puts Mbuthuma in an offside position.
“It’s very tight, but you can see clearly here that the leg of Miguel outside the line, Mbuthuma inside the line.
“Mbuthuma here is offside. This goal was not supposed to have stood. This is not right from this situation. It [the goal] should not have been allowed. This is not right.”
The second call went against Pirates. Oswin Appollis had a goal ruled out for offside in the second half, but Hlungwani says it should have counted because Chiefs defender Zitha Kwinika played the attacker onside.
“Appollis scored a goal that was ruled offside, and we have Kwinika playing Appollis onside,” he said.
