NPA Withdraws Assault and Extortion Charges Against Colonel Ismail Dawood
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has withdrawn assault and extortion charges against senior Crime Intelligence officer Colonel Ismail Dawood following a review of the evidence and representations submitted by his legal team.
The charges stemmed from an alleged incident in Hillbrow, Johannesburg, in December 2023, involving accusations that Dawood assaulted a complainant and demanded money from him.
The NPA found insufficient evidence to sustain the assault charge, while the available evidence did not support the extortion allegation.
The case involved a financial dispute of approximately R3.5 million. Dawood’s legal team maintained that the matter was a civil dispute involving money allegedly owed to his family through an investment arrangement.
Dawood handed himself over to police in July 2026 and was later granted R10 000 bail by the Johannesburg High Court.
The withdrawal brings the criminal proceedings in this particular matter to an end.
