Convicted Murderer Back in Court After Fatal Stabbing of Nine-Year-Old Boy in Upington

A 26-year-old convicted murderer on parole has appeared in the Upington District Court for allegedly stabbing a nine-year-old boy to death while the child slept.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) confirmed that Willem Koper faced charges on Friday following the brutal incident in Louisevale Dorp, near Upington.

The victim was a Grade 2 learner at Frank Biggs Primary School.

According to the State, the tragedy unfolded in the early hours of Sunday.

Koper had reportedly been in an argument with a relative of the deceased on the previous evening. To avoid further conflict, the woman left the premises and did not return for the night.

The prosecution alleges that Koper returned to the house later that night.

He then fatally stabbed the nine-year-old boy, who was sleeping in the room where the woman usually slept.

Emergency medical services rushed to the scene, but the child was declared dead upon arrival.

The court appearance revealed a harrowing criminal record. Koper is currently out on parole, which was granted on 20 August 2025 and set to expire in July 2029. His past convictions include murder onvicted on 2 July 2021 and sentenced to eight years imprisonment and statutory Rape & Assault (GBH) where he was onvicted on 7 July 2021 and sentenced to five years in prison.

The matter has been postponed to 29 October 2026 for a possible bail application. Koper remains in police custody.

State Prosecutor Elouise du Plessis indicated that the State will vehemently oppose bail due to the gravity of the offence, public safety anxieties, and Koper’s history of violent crimes.

Senior Public Prosecutor Christopher Bouman expressed deep shock over the killing, reaffirming the NPA’s hardline stance on crimes against children.

“The NPA regards violence against children in an extremely serious light,” Bouman stated. “Children are among the most vulnerable members of our society and must be protected from violence, abuse, and neglect. The prosecution will pursue this matter vigorously.”

Police investigations into the murder are ongoing.
