“We Are Not Losing, But It’s Not Good Enough”: Sheppard Pinpoints Chiefs’ Two Big Problems
Unbeaten but unconvincing. That’s where Kaizer Chiefs find themselves after another frustrating draw.
Amakhosi were held 1-1 by Stellenbosch FC at FNB Stadium on Tuesday night. It’s their fifth draw in eight league games, and assistant coach Dillon Sheppard didn’t hide his concern.
Sinoxolo Kwayiba put the visitors ahead early in the second half. Mduduzi Shabalala rescued a point in the 58th minute. But Chiefs wasted several glaring chances to win it, and Sheppard knows exactly what’s wrong.
Two problems. Wasteful attack. Leaky defence.
“It is not a case of settling for a point,” said Sheppard. “We are not losing games, but it is not good enough.”
He also pointed to a tactical imbalance.
“As the game went on we wanted to throw bodies forward, but we were a bit back-heavy. They threw two up front and we were five at the back.
“We tried to get the wing backs higher and to get other midfielders to join, but we didn’t have that. We have to go back and improve,” he added.
The final third is where it all unravels.
“We get into the final third and are not able to capitalise. It is something we have to work on.”
Sheppard insists the performances are close, but the goals conceded are the worry.
“We want to win football games. I think we are doing enough to win, but if you look at the type of goals we are conceding, we have to be better.”
There’s little time to fix it. Chiefs travel to face Red Arrows FC on Saturday, 17 October, in the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup second qualifying round.
