Recorded call played in Sibiya case as Stateraises witness interference
Prosecution’s concerns about contact with a witness come under scrutiny.
A recorded telephone conversation was played during Shadrack Sibiya’s bail proceedings as the
prosecution raised allegations of witness interference, according to EWN’s report of the 1 October
hearing
The report described a conversation in which a man identified as Maumela questioned the father of
the minor complainant about another complainant in the case. The recording became part of the
arguments heard at the Randburg Magistrate’s Court.
Separate reporting by The National said investigating officer Detective Sergeant Nokukhanya
Ndlovu detailed allegedly threatening calls received by a witness after the case was opened.
The defence also presented a response to the contact allegations. An affidavit from Sibiya’s son said
a family friend had contacted a complainant without the family’s knowledge or instruction, The
Citizen reported.
The competing accounts are material to the bail dispute, but an allegation of interference is not a
judicial finding that Sibiya directed it. He denies the criminal allegations against him.
