WESTERN CAPE MAYOR, MUNICIPAL MANAGER, AND CFO ARRESTED IN SOUTHERN COAST KICKBACK SCANDAL
In a major crackdown on local government corruption, the South African Police Service (SAPS) Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) has arrested a Mayor, a Municipal Manager, and a Chief Financial Officer (CFO) from a municipality along the Southern Coast of the Western Cape.
The high-profile trio was taken into custody on Thursday, 01 October 2026, following an intense investigation into alleged extortion and graft linked to a local municipal security services contract.
According to the SAPS media statement, the arrests were executed after law enforcement received intelligence that the municipal leadership was actively soliciting kickbacks from a businessman.
The businessman, who had been officially awarded the security services contract, was allegedly forced to pay senior officials to ensure the contract was not prematurely terminated.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the victim, driven by fear of losing his livelihood and business contract, had already paid hundreds of thousands of rands to the suspects.
The PKTT’s intervention underscores ongoing efforts to root out criminal networks exploiting public procurement processes within South African municipalities.
All three high-ranking municipal officials face formal charges of corruption. They remain in custody and are scheduled to make their initial appearance in court on Monday, 05 October 2026.
