Mosimane gives Modiba injury update after Guinea win
Pitso Mosimane has revealed the latest on Aubrey Modiba after the Bafana Bafana defender was forced off during their 2-1 win over Guinea.
Modiba could not finish Saturday’s AFCON qualifier at Orlando Amstel Arena and was replaced by Samukele Kabini.
Mosimane explained that the demands placed on his full-backs eventually took their toll on Modiba.
“Aubrey is overloaded. My full-backs were on duty today. So, Aubrey is overloaded, but we have Kabini,” said Mosimane.
The Bafana coach confirmed that Modiba is struggling with a tight hamstring.
“Aubrey’s got a tight hamstring, which is not nice for us, but at least we still have Fawaaz Basadien, and we still have Kabini,” he added.
Mosimane believes the 30-man squad he selected could now prove crucial as injuries begin to hit the team.
“Hence, we called 30 players. You can see now, people are falling off, and we just played one match,” he said.
The coach also explained why he wanted a large squad and more matches during the FIFA break.
He pointed to Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp’s ability to work with a bigger group of players, while acknowledging the difficulties of managing national-team camps.
“I would like to play four games, but yeah,” Mosimane said.
He added that the upcoming matches are important because they could be the final opportunities to prepare before the AFCON finals.
For now, Bafana will have to wait for further clarity on Modiba’s hamstring before knowing whether he will be available for the next matches.
