Two mass shootings leave 27 dead in Gauteng and Western Cape
At least 27 people were killed and 26 wounded in two separate mass shootings in Gauteng and the Western Cape within hours of each other, with police launching manhunts for the suspects.
The first shooting happened at about 9.30pm on Saturday at a tavern in Extension 3, Wedela, on Gauteng’s West Rand. Police said eight armed suspects opened fire on patrons inside and outside the tavern. Seventeen people, 13 men and four women were killed, while 15 others were wounded.
Police said the suspects were armed with AK-47 rifles and pistols and allegedly searched some victims for their cellphones before fleeing in two vehicles. Two vehicles were also set alight. The motive remains unknown and no arrests have been made.
At about 1.46am on Sunday, 10 people were killed and 11 wounded when gunmen opened fire at an entertainment venue and shisanyama in Lwandle, near Cape Town. Five victims died at the scene, while five others died after being taken to medical facilities. No arrests have been made.
Police have not indicated any connection between the two shootings. Investigations are continuing in both provinces.
