Media Statement GAUTENG – On Thursday, 9 January 2025, the South African Police Service in Tshwane continued with Operation Shanela in the Mamelodi-East and Mamelodi-West policing precincts. Under the leadership of Major-General Samuel Thine, District Commissioner of Tshwane, this operation continued with a multi-stakeholder approach, resulting in the apprehension of 352 individuals for various offenses. The operation focused on key priorities, including the removal of unlicensed firearms, apprehension of wanted suspects, and enforcement of liquor license compliance. During the first phase of the operation, Tshwane Detectives apprehended 279 individuals for serious offenses, including, 73 arrests for gender-based violence, 50 arrests for assault to inflict Grievous bodily harm, 2 for murder, 8 arrests for armed robbery, and 5 arrest for rape. 58 undocumented individuals were detained and are awaiting legal processes for deportation. 3 suspects were arrested for possession and dealing in drugs, with 38 ziplock bags containing various substances, 98 pinches of Nyaope, a bag of Dagga, 19 Mandrax tablets and an undisclosed amount of cash were found in their possession. 3 Persons were arrested for possession of illicit cigarettes when 40 cartons and 35 packets were found in their possession. During this operation, 838 persons, 381 vehicles and 55 vehicles were tested to verify whether they had been stolen. 168 AARTO infringement notices were issued by traffic officials, totaling R82 950 with 1 person being arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, another person for urinating in public with another person for smoking Dagga in public. Further, 28 premises and 8 liquor establishments were inspected with 6 liquor outlets closed and 5 814 000 ml of alcohol confiscated for non-compliance with the Liquor.
