Media Statement OR TAMBO DISTRICT – With the festive season in full swing in the district, the OR Tambo District Commissioner, Major General Norman Modishana applauded his members for clamping down on crime, when members recovered 15 unlicensed/ prohibited firearms and suspected to be stolen stock in various parts of the vast OR Tambo District. Amongst the recovered firearms was an AK 47 automatic Rifle and three home-made shotguns all with ammunition. Amongst those apprehended were five suspects in Qumbu, all found in possession of unlicensed firearms with erased serial numbers when they were tactically stopped and searched in town whilst driving in a vehicle. A stolen VW Polo vehicle linked to a Kirstenhof case in Western Cape Province was recovered in Ngqeleni, Hluleka locality – Ntlaza A/A. Roadblocks held over the weekend between Lusikisiki and Coffee Bay saw about 1255 vehicles and 2723 people being stopped and searched and the subsequent seizure of dangerous weapons. A total of 18 drivers were arrested for drunk and driving in Port Port St Johns and Mthatha and their blood samples were taken, awaiting the results so as to guarantee a conviction. About 183 recovered sheep suspected to have been stolen were returned to their rightful owners whilst others were impounded and taken to municipality impound centres in Qumbu and Tsolo. “We have a mammoth task ahead of us of suffocating criminals in fighting crime during the festive season and beyond for all people to be safe and also feel that they are safe”, concluded Major General Norman Modishana, the OR Tambo District Commissioner.
